“GEAR UP Leaves No Child Behind”
GEAR UP was started in 1998 when former President Bill Clinton proposed the High Hopes for College initiative to create a national goal that every college should partner with at least one middle school in a low-income community to help raise expectations and ensure that students were well-prepared for college. The new federally funded GEAR UP Program was created as a result of this initiative.
The overall goal of the GEAR UP Program is to create educational and community partnerships in preparing students for post secondary education. The program intends to increase parental involvement and provide opportunities for professional development for teachers and staff.
Reedley College GEAR UP Program was first funded in 1999 to serve 408 7th grade students from Parlier Junior High School and Citrus Middle School in Orange Cove. GEAR UP requires that at least two community partners be active in the program and they are, “The Rural Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program,” and “Catholic Charities”. The GEAR UP Program has been following the 7th grade cohort of students since 1999 which are currently in the 12th grade at Parlier High School and Reedley High School.
The Reedley College GEAR UP Program has focused on providing services in the following areas:
- academic support,
- guidance and counseling,
- college readiness,
- career awareness, and
- educational, motivational, and cultural enrichments.
- field trips to institutions of higher education
- financial aid workshops
During the summer (June-July) residential component, students participate in courses developed to stimulate their minds and prepare them for college life. The purpose of the Residential Summer Program Component is to provide students the experience and understanding of college life. Students enroll in college English or math courses. Students also take courses in computers, self-discovery, and Spanish. Students meet with a variety of guest speakers; participate in residential activities and educational field trips to CSU and UC college campuses
