What is Title V at Reedley College?

Title V is a five-year, federally funded grant awarded by the United States Department of Education.  The overall goal of the grant is to improve success and retention of low-income and Latino students.  The grant money award is allocated and distributed between two Title V Activities.

Activity 1  (Reedley College) 

**First Year Experience (FYE) Program

Entering college for the first time can be challenging academically and personally.  The First-Year Experience Program is designed to increase student success.  Through this program, Reedley College will be offering two courses that provide a comprehensive orientation to ease the transition into Reedley College.  These two courses will be offered in a stand-alone or learning community format.  A learning community is a group of students who are enrolled in two or more courses linked together through a common theme.  New students are encouraged to register in one of the following two courses depending on their Reedley College Placement Test Scores:

            Guidance Studies 53    College Life Management (3 - unit transfer level course)

            Guidance Studies 264    First-Year Orientation (2 - unit course)

**Transfer Olympic Program

TOP is a program that prepares students to be able to transfer by having them participate in transfer-related activities.  Students will be placed in following Olympic Medal Groups depending on the completion of a set of required units and activities:

            Bronze Circle

            Silver Circle

            Gold Circle

As TOP students progress through the circles, benefits and incentives include: 

            Priority Registration

            Reedley College Supplies

            Field Trips to Colleges

            Recognition of Achievement

            TOP Reception

            Specialized Workshops

Specialized Workshops may include:

            IGETC vs. CSU

            CSU Admission

            UC Admission

            Health Careers

            Safety on Campus

**Community of Learners

Community of Learners is created when two or more courses are linked together through a common theme or purpose.  Students are challenged to build connections between courses.

Types of Learning Communities:

            Pairs

            Triads

            Clusters

            Whole Programs

As the grant progresses, there will be more opportunities for students to be a part of a learning community.

**Community of Faculty

The Community of Faculty support the Community of Learners.  Training and support for faculty in developing and implementing learning communities is provided.  Resources and technology will be available for faculty to utilize through the Instructional Resource Center.

Activity 2  (Madera Center)

GOAL:  Improve and Strengthen Math and Science Programs

Measurable through:

            Increased student GPA?s in Math, Life and Physical Sciences.

            Increased opportunities to be a part of a learning community.

            Increased enrollment in Life and Physical Sciences.

Some of the learning communities involve a tutorial component.  Students will also have access, both within and outside the classroom, to the latest technological advances to help make concepts in courses more concrete.
